Insect-Damaged Beans
Insect-damaged beans are typically caused by the penetration of coffee berry borers, which tunnel through the bean’s parenchyma tissue and create channels within the internal structure and side walls. Holes located at the two poles of the bean are of less significance; however, damage in the central area indicates deeper tissue destruction, reduced density, and a decline in overall quality.

Cracked Beans
Cracks usually result from moisture fluctuations, rapid drying, or mechanical impact during processing stages. Cracking weakens the bean’s structure, creates an uneven and fissured surface, and during roasting leads to uneven heat development and an increased risk of flavor defects. It may also create favorable conditions for fungal growth.

Shell Beans
Shell beans form when the bean develops incompletely or when uneven embryonic development results in only a thin outer shell of the hard endocarp being formed. These shells are often hollow inside, extremely lightweight, and produce a hollow sound. During roasting, they burn quickly and generate undesirable flavors.
Deformed Beans
Deformed beans are usually the result of unripe cherries, poor plant nutrition, or mechanical compression during growth. They exhibit asymmetrical shapes, irregular edges, or compression on one side. This visual irregularity indicates incomplete development and often leads to uneven roasting and reduced uniformity in the cup.
Sometimes a single coffee bean may exhibit multiple defects simultaneously; for example, a bean may be both cracked and insect-damaged, as these abnormalities can overlap during different stages of growth or processing.
In addition to defective beans, coffee lots may also contain foreign materials such as small stones, wood fragments, large husk pieces, or other irregular particles, all of which can be independently detected and removed by the machine.

UI of Coffee Sorting Machine
The user interface (UI) of a sorting machine provides operators with a way to monitor, control, and adjust the machine’s sorting process. After the device boots up, the Login page appears, where the user must enter their username and password. An admin and several simple users can be defined for this device. The admin has more access than simple users.
